Jane Bonsall
Experience and Background
I discovered my love of teaching during my undergraduate studies, while I worked both as an independent tutor and as Primary 5 classroom assistant. Through this work I developed adaptive methods of supporting for young students with a range of learning specificities. I also worked as a writing tutor at the university's Peer Support Centre, and became proficient in delivering clear, comprehensive academic writing instruction suited to the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and learning requirements.

I began tutoring in Edinburgh upon my arrival here in 2012 for my Masters degree. I have helped students aged 7-17 succeed in a range of subject areas, including: foundational maths skills and numeracy; algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and advanced National 5s maths skills; close and critical reading, reflective and analytical essay writing, and grammar and punctuation; and general study skills.

In 2016-2019, while completing my PhD, I worked as an English tutor at the University of Edinburgh, teaching and marking the work of first year students. This included setting my own assignments based on the English Literature course curriculum, and tailoring learning outcomes to meet the needs of my students.
I have continued my private tutoring through this pandemic, moving all instruction online and developing dynamic activities to keep students engaged with their work. My broad teaching experiences have given me the ability to meet students where they are, identify their particular academic needs, and help them develop the analytical skills and study habits to serve them in the future.
